One of the best ways to save money on your big day is to use a rental company, especially if your venue does not include any decorations, chairs, tables, etc. Not only will this save you money, but it can also save you a lot of hassle! I talked with the owner of an event rental company called Rural 27 in Covington, Indiana to make sure you know everything you need to about rentals!
What are some items people tend to not realize they can rent?
Decor rentals have come a long way since we started back in 2010. At that time when you heard of a "rental company," you automatically assumed a tent & chairs. I am so amazed at how this industry has just exploded and how fast it has grown. With that shift, clients have realized more over the years what is available to them on the rental aspect from smaller items like card boxes, to table runners, to an array of candle holders.
What do you think is the most cost-effective rental?
I am huge into repurposing. If you can't find a new home/space for it after your wedding or event, you should think about renting it instead. Weddings continue to evolve, which will never change which is one reason why I love this job, so you are constantly pushed to be on your toes.
Also, this is your day, and no matter what the current trends are, if they aren't for you, that's okay. You don't have to pick items because they are in the wedding aisle at a store, pick what speaks to you. If you pick a glass container to use for your card box and reuse in your dining room, love it.
What should a couple look for in a rental company?
Just like picking any vendor for your event, you need to find someone who values the same things you do. The vendors you choose you are saying to them, "I trust you." When these three words are truly meant, they can be so powerful. There is no way you can be in all the places you want to be on your big day, which is why finding people you can trust to "pass the reigns" to is such an important piece to making sure everything you spent so much time envisioning actually happens.
Is there anything you recommend people buying rather than renting?
It's more a matter of what is important to you and if you want to keep it after the big day is over. If your grandmother made all your cakes from the time you were born and the idea of using her cake utensils tops any style you can find, then that's what weddings are about. It's about having everyone you love in one space for one night and what memories are being created. Yes, all the other details are amazing, but at the end of the day, it's the people who make that day memorable from your bridal party, to your guest, to your vendors.
How early do you recommend people book their rentals?
Once the venue and date are booked, I would start locking down all your vendors. Go off recommendations you receive and preferred vendor lists, but do your homework also.
What is your favorite rental to add a special touch to someone’s special day?
Everyone's style is so different, and I love that, but something you can never go wrong with is candles. Lighting is so important from the moment you see your space for the first time to once the sun sets and lights dim.
Make sure you are always checking with your venue to see what is allowed before booking any rentals. We think this is an awesome way to get some unique pieces for your wedding and to save money if you aren't at an all-inclusive venue!
